Have a Heart. Mr. Van Elslander strongly believes in supporting those with disabilities and education for underprivileged youth, the homeless and countless others in need. That's why Art Van Furniture is proud to host and sponsor events and nonprofit organizations that help the community at large, including over 150 charities Michigan-wide.
Focus: HOPE In 2011, Art Van donated $50,000 to Focus: HOPE. In 2012, the company has committed $1 million in funding and over $20,000 worth of food, books, art supplies, and mattresses. Art Van's support will go even further, in the form of quarterly fundraising and friend-raising events in its stores. Mr. Van Elslander was a close friend of Focus: HOPE's co-Founder, Eleanor Josaitis, and said this about the company's commitment to carrying on her work: "Eleanor had such a strong impact on so many lives. Keeping her spirit, her legacy and her work alive is imperative." Learn more.
Forgotten Harvest Forgotten Harvest, one of the original Art Van Million Dollar Charity Challenge grant recipients, was chosen for a special $1 Million contribution because it is a vital source of food to many of our charity partners and to the community. The Art Van donation will enable Forgotten Harvest to provide the equivalent of five million meals, or roughly 14,000 meals per day. Forgotten Harvest is America's most efficient food rescue organization. Part of our work with Forgotten Harvest is support of the Good Neighbors Holiday Campaign. Learn more.
America's Thanksgiving Day Parade
In 1990, when the annual Detroit Thanksgiving Day Parade was in financial peril, Mr. Van Elslander made a historic donation that saved the Michigan tradition, which is now known as America's Thanksgiving Parade®. Since then, the company has been a major contributor to the event each year. And in 2009, to honor his strong and consistent support and Art Van Furniture's 50th anniversary, Mr. Van Elslander was invited to serve as Co-Grand Marshal of the Parade, which featured the float, "Knights of the Charitable Roundtable."
Cancer and ophthalmology are also areas receiving Mr. Van Elslander's assistance. He has made significant contributions to the Van Elslander Cancer Center, the Van Elslander Family Pavilion and the Van Elslander Neurosciences Center at St. John Health System, the Van Elslander Center at St. Vincent De Paul and the David Hermelin Brain Cancer Center at Henry Ford Health System. Currently, Mr. Van Elslander sits on the board of the St. John Health Foundation and CNBS Financial.
