Kid's Beds

Getting the right bed for your kids is important for their health as they grow up. With one of the biggest selections of kid’s beds in the Midwest, Art Van has kid-sized beds for any age, from toddlers to teens and everything in between.

Buying Guide

Picking out the right beds for your kids can be a surprisingly involved process. There are a lot more styles to pick from than you might expect and, as anyone who has had to pick out kids’ clothes know, finding the right size for your kid can be a chore.

This is where Art Van comes in: we have the knowledge and experience to give your child the right bed, helping them sleep easy through the night, and for many years to come.

What Size Bed Does My Kid Need?

Two big questions we often hear about kids' beds: what size should my kid's bed be? How long will this bed last?

For determining the right bed size, know these three types: toddler beds, cribs, and kids beds. Toddler beds and cribs tend to be the same size mattress, with the difference being the style of enclosure - cribs are enclosed for safety, whereas toddler beds are open like a standard bed. Many modern cribs are designed to convert to standard toddler beds once your little ones reach the right age and size.

Kids’ beds differ from toddler beds and cribs because of their size. They're designed for kids older than a toddler, but aren't ready for a "grown up" bed just yet.

Kids’ beds typically come in twin or full sizes. The big difference between kid and adult beds is the style - bed size is universal no matter who it's for, but kids’ bedframes tend to be smaller and aesthetically designed for children.

Eventually, your kid will grow out of their crib and need a larger bed. There aren't any hard-and-fast rules as to when that will happen, but we'll have you covered when it does.

What Styles of Kid Beds Can I Choose From?

While the mattresses in kids' beds are similar to those you find in grown-up beds, the biggest difference is the frames around them.

Kids' beds are smaller to take up less space, and many of them are designed with storage underneath to help organize clothes, toys and more.

  • Kids’ Panel Beds – One of the most common kid bed styles is the panel bed. The panel bed consists of several different wooden panels connected together to form both a bedframe and headboard to save space. These panel beds come in many colors and are perfect for all ages.
  • Kids’ Captain’s Beds – A captain’s bed is similar to a panel bed but with a more ornate design, and they frequently have storage options like drawers or headboard cubbies. Captain's beds are great for kids who gravitate towards more "adult" designs.
  • Kids’ Storage Beds – Storage is important with kids' beds, due to the amount of stuff kids wind up accumulating. Many kids’ beds feature bookcases built into the headboard (typically referred to as bookcase beds) for books or toys.
  • Kids’ Metal Beds – The material of the frame can make a difference. While panel and captain's beds tend to be made primarily from wood or plastic, slimmer steel-frame beds are for smaller bedrooms. Metal kids’ beds are more durable and are easier to clean, an important factor with kids.
  • Kids’ Bunk Beds & Kids’ Loft Beds – If you have twins or siblings that share a room, kids’ bunk beds or kids’ loft beds are the space-saving way to go.

Bunk beds are the classic one-over-the-other design with a ladder to help your kids get to the top bunk This design helps you conserve floorspace in your kids’ bedroom by using more vertical space, helping you save space overall.

If you don't want a traditional bunk bed, consider the loft bed. It's similar to a bunk bed, but the bottom bed tends to face outwards like a standard bed instead of sitting parallel to the top bunk. It needs more space in the room itself but has a bit more comfort and spaciousness for your kids.
