Recliners

For millions of people, the trusty recliner is the best (and most comfortable) spot in the house to relax and watch some TV.

Whether you're looking for a recliner upgrade, or you need a new recliner chair to match your room's style, Art Van's huge selection of recliners and recliner chairs has you covered. Kick up your feet and relax - we've got all the important info you need before you buy.

Buying Guide

You might be surprised to learn there are many different types of recliners to choose from. Less surprising: Art Van carries several different styles of recliners, all with their own methods of reclining and unique comfort.

What Kinds of Recliner Are There?

The first step in finding your perfect recliner is knowing the different types of recliners, and which will benefit you the most.

  • Rocker Recliners – Rocker recliners are the most common type of recliner. Rocker recliners are a type of reclining chair that rocks back and forth (like a standard rocking chair) while still offering a reclining feature in both the back of the chair and the legs, typically operated by a handle on the side. This allows you to rock back and forth in place when sitting, while still offering the option to recline and relax when you really need to put your feet up. Modern rocker recliners can include a number of different accessories and are available with a lot of upholstery options, but they all function largely the same.
  • Glider Recliners – Glider recliners are similar to rocker recliners, but the movement works differently. True to their name, glider reclining chairs move back and forth on a set track instead of rocking. Many people prefer the movement of glider recliners, but your choice boils down to which one is most comfortable.
  • Swivel Recliners – Swivel recliners work similarly to other types of recliner except they offer an even greater range of motion. Swivel recliners sit on a circular base that allows them to swivel or pivot left and right, similar to how an office chair swivels on its stand. Swivel recliners are a great choice when you want more motion than the back-and-forth gliding of other recliners.
  • Electric Recliners/Power Recliners – Electric recliners, more commonly referred to as power recliners, offer the same great relaxation that manual recliners do but an electric motor does the work for you. Instead of having to pull a lever to recline, a small motor inside your power recliner does it for you. Some models can be programmed to remember your favorite positions or reclining angles. Other power recliners also come in rocking or gliding varieties too.
  • Massage Recliners – Massage recliners are a luxury seating option that has a built-in massage system as part of the chair cushion. Massage recliners offer the same support and reclining features, but with the addition of massaging rollers on the inside for your neck, shoulders, back, and even legs. These are a good option for anyone with medical issues that need frequent massaging (bad joints, hip problems) or anyone who wants top-of-the-line relaxation in a chair.
What Style of Recliner Should I Get?

With all these options, you should ask yourself two things before deciding on a recliner: how much space do you have, and what do you want out of your recliner?

Recliner Space Concerns

Due to their design and function, most recliners need a lot more space than normal chairs to work properly. Generally speaking, recliners take up more space when reclined than when they’re not, and this needs to be taken into account when planning for a new recliner in your home. The leg component of a recliner sweeps upward in the front, and the back component leans back. Make sure you have ample room for your recliner to stretch out.

With this in mind, consider your space. Glider and rocker recliner need to be put in your room away from walls to give them space to recline and move around.

If you live in an apartment, or have a smaller living room, a wall recliner may be the solution. Wall recliners are designed to not move back as far as a standard recliner thanks to a special track installed in the base.

Reclining Needs

Aside from space concerns, the recliner you choose will depend on what you need in a seat. Some recliners have health benefits, like massaging recliners or lift chairs that allow for both sleeping and sitting positions. These recliners can help with back issues or joint pain, an important consideration for you and your loved ones. Lift chairs are designed to make it easier to get into and out of the chair itself, allowing for easier access for people with limited mobility or other health concerns.

Even if you don’t have a health concern, you’ll want to make sure your recliner is the right size. If you’re on the big and tall side, you’ll want to make sure to find a large or overstuffed recliner that can fit you comfortably while still being able to recline. On the flipside, kid’s recliners are available for little ones who want a recliner of their own.

What Kind of Upholstery do Reclining Chairs Have?

The classic recliner is typically thought of in leather, but there's more than just that. There are plenty of stylish fabric options available. Far removed from the days of old when everyone’s recliner was tan or grey, today’s recliners come in fun patterns and bright colors designed to liven up whatever room they’re in while still offering the comfort and relaxation you’ve come to expect from reclining chairs.
