Lighting

Lighting is a key component of room design and your choice of lamps. Lighting placement and the amount of light emitted can set the perfect mood in a room. You’ve got many options when it comes to lighting, ranging from floor lamps and table lamps to chandeliers and wall sconces. Art Van has lamps for every room of your home in many colors, shapes and styles.

Buying Guide

The key to buying lamps for any room is figuring out what kind of light you need. The main source of lamp light in the room is referred to as primary lighting and provides the main amount of brightness in the room. The primary light usually comes from a ceiling lamp and is turned on and off via light switch near the room entrance. If you’re happy with your current primary light source but want more lighting in the room, accent lighting is your best bet.

Table lamps are considered accent lights to brighten corners in a room, or as secondary lighting to switch off the primary light but still have some subdued or mood illumination in the room. If you want to light a specific point in the room – a lamp positioned next to your recliner or reading chair for example – you’ll be adding task lighting to the room. Task lights include desk lamps and floor lamps. Accent lighting can also be placed in the room to illuminate specific interest items in the room like a piece of wall art or a sculpture.

Types of Lamps

Art Van has many types of lamp designs to make your room illumination project easy. These lamps include:

  • Ceiling Lights – Flush mount ceiling lights are versatile and the most common ceiling light fixtures in the home. These lights tend to blend into the room décor and emit light without attracting attention.
  • Chandeliers – Sometimes called semi-flush mount lights, chandeliers are designed to make a bold statement in the room. While the canopy of the chandelier is placed flush against the ceiling, every other part of the chandelier hangs down in all its glory, ready to be the focal point in the room.
  • Table Lamps – Table lamps add style and more light to the room. The shade and body of the lamp represent the style, allowing the lamp to represent an artistic feature in the room.
  • Floor Lamps – You can add drama to your room design with a floor lamp. Functionally, floor lamps are considered task lighting as they illuminate a specific spot in the room. But style-wise, floor lamps are large pieces that can make a statement and play a key role in your room design.
  • Pendant Lights – Pendant lights are hanging light fixtures often found in the kitchen. These fixtures are usually placed over a kitchen island or table, breakfast nook or prep area. Pendants can also be placed over the dining room table to provide a relaxed or romantic mood.
  • Wall Sconces – The wall sconce allows you to add warm accent lighting to a room. Wall sconces can be placed in the bedroom, living room and in hallways to give the space a nice touch of illumination.
Choose Your Style

After defining your lighting needs, choose your lamps based on the style of your room. If you have sleek, modern leather furniture steer away from a 19th Century-style floor lamp to light the room. Some lighting style mixes can be artful and eclectic, but to be safe avoid clashing lighting styles at all costs.

  • Casual Lighting – Casual style lamps come in a variety of looks including colorful bases, intricately detailed lamp shades and shapes ranging from rectangular to tubular.
  • Farmhouse Lighting – Farmhouse lamps have vintage designs and feature neutral colors that blend nicely with understated décor.
  • Mid-Century Lighting – Unusual angles and vintage shapes allow mid-century lamps to be right at home in your retro-style room.
  • Modern Lighting – Bold shapes and materials like glass and metal give modern lamps a look to perfectly complement the sleek lines in your modern room design.
  • Traditional Lighting – Soft curves and detail designs in the lamp shades make traditional lighting fixtures a beautiful option for many rooms.
  • Urban Lighting – Industrial materials including rope, wood and metal with bold designs give urban lighting an edge that will make a unique statement in the room.
