Art Van Furniture is a name synonymous with superior quality, service and customer satisfaction. And as with the company that bears his name, Mr. Art Van Elslander has a deep commitment not only to his customers and his 3600 employees, but to the community at large.
From the ground up. Art Van Elslander, founder of Art Van Furniture, began working in a Detroit furniture store as a young man. In just a few short years, he was ready for a bigger challenge and opened his own store on Gratiot Avenue and 10 Mile Road in 1959. His founding philosophy was to provide the community with quality furniture at great prices, with always high standards of customer service.
Known then as Art Van’s, Art Van Elslander was the sole employee of the store, which featured Danish and contemporary home furnishings. Though Detroit's economy was struggling, the company grew and later the name was changed to the current Art Van Furniture. In 1973, Art Van Furniture moved its headquarters from 12 Mile and Van Dyke Road to the 14 Mile location in Warren, where it is still located today. In 2017, Art Van Elslander sold the company to TH Lee Partners of Boston, MA.
Art Van Elslander passed away in February 12, 2018 at the age of 87. He was honored as one of Michigan’s greatest retailers and philanthropists. Six decades later his legacy lives on with more than 200 stores operating as Art Van Furniture LLC. Stores are located in nine states including Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Maryland under the following brands: Art Van Furniture, Art Van Pure Sleep, AV Flooring, Scott Shuptrine Interiors, Levin Furniture, Levin Mattress and Wolf Furniture.

Philanthropy in Our Community. Art Van Furniture provides support to non-profit organizations such as Forgotten Harvest, Gleaners Community Food Bank, The Henry Ford Health System, Genesys Health Foundation, St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation, Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital Foundation and America's Thanksgiving Day Parade. In addition, Art Van Furniture is proud to host fund raising events for our Art Van Charity Challenge recipients, annual toy collection drives for Toys for Tots and blood drives for the American Red Cross.
The Art Van Charity Challenge. For us at Art Van Furniture, the communities we serve are home, and we want to do as much as we can to help as many people as we can. That’s the philosophy behind the Art Van Charity Challenge, which has raised $24 Million for charities in our local communities over the last nine years, with a special focus on assisting families, children and the hungry. The Art Van Charity Challenge spans four regions: Michigan, Toledo, Fort Wayne and Chicago, and supports more than 259 charity partners through grants, sponsorships and in-kind donations.
Green facilities. With a focus on innovation an automated warehouse was constructed in 2001. This one-of-a-kind 183,000 square-foot storage and retrieval system is completely automated, allowing Art Van Furniture to leave a smaller environmental footprint than a traditional warehouse by using 75% less lighting, heating, and cooling. And, our stores and warehouse use LED lighting to reduce our carbon footprint.
Green is our favorite color. Last year alone, our warehouse recycled 2,000 tons of cardboard, 240 tons of plastic and 110 tons of Styrofoam. And, we recycle mattresses, too!
Living with Purpose
Every year, we want to share the benefits of the 68 Day Challenge by inviting our Art Van family to join the program - family members, closest friends, vendor partners and, of course, our beloved customers across the Midwest. Simply put, the 68 Day Challenge is a process to jumpstart your New Year. It’s all about recognizing a goal, pushing yourself to new limits, planning for new habits, taking action and improving along the way.LEARN MORE
